Padparadscha Sapphires are the rarest of all sapphires.
Unbeknownst to most, Padparadscha (pronounced PAHD-pah-RAHD-cha) sapphires are one of the rarest and the most unique gemstones in the world. The name Padparadscha comes from an ancient Sanskrit word describing the exquisite color of a lotus flower. These beautiful gemstones are extremely rare and seldom seen. Their signature peachy color is truly unequalled and cannot be found in any other gemstones.
The average consumers have probably never heard of a Padparadscha sapphire, much less seen one in real life. The numbers of fine quality specimens available on the market are exceedingly low, and even when available, are readily purchased by collectors and gem connoisseurs. Because of this, fine quality Padparadscha sapphires normally command extremely high prices.
Historically speaking, Padparadscha sapphires have solely been the pride of Sri Lanka (Ceylon). It wasn't until the last few decades that other countries have started to produce gemstones with colors similar to Ceylon Padparascha. However, most experts agree that the finest Padparadscha sapphires still come from Sri Lanka and some would even insist that the name Padparadscha can only be used to describe gems unearthed from Sri Lanka.
Consumers should be aware that a lot of internet dealers are selling low-priced diffused Padparadscha-colored sapphires which are in fact not genuine Padparadschas. These stones are treated with an artificial process known as diffusion, which diffuses coloring onto the surface of gemstones. Because the effect of diffusion is not permanent, the coloring on the surface will eventually fade away, possibly revealing the less-than-ideal colors of the original stone. If you do purchase a Padparadscha sapphire, make sure you purchase from a reputable dealer that guarantees that the gems is a true Padparadscha.
